Analysis by RAPD of the genetic structure of Astyanax altiparanae (Pisces, Characiformes) in reservoirs on the Paranapanema River, Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Leuzzi,Maria Sueli Papa; Almeida,Fernanda Simões de; Orsi,Mário Luís; Sodré,Leda Maria Koelblinger.
In this study, the RAPD technique was used to analyze the genetic structure of populations of the fish Astyanax altiparanae (Characidae, Tetragonopterinae) living in the lower, middle and upper Paranapanema River, Brazil. The aim was to assess this structure regarding fish handling and conservation programs. The genetic variability (P) was found to be 42.64%, 75% and 75% in the low, middle and upper reaches, respectively. The dendrogram of genetic similarity, obtained by comparative analysis of the sets of samples from the three sites, showed the formation of three clusters. All of the genetic parameters used indicate that the population in the lower Paranapanema is genetically different from those in the middle and upper sections. The theta P test shows...

Conservation implications of the mating system of the Pampa Hermosa landrace of peach palm analyzed with microsatellite markers Genet. Mol. Biol.
Picanço-Rodrigues,Doriane; Astolfi-Filho,Spartaco; Lemes,Maristerra R.; Gribel,Rogerio; Sebbenn,Alexandre M.; Clement,Charles R..
Peach palm (Bactris gasipaes) is cultivated by many indigenous and traditional communities from Amazonia to Central America for its edible fruits, and is currently important for its heart-of-palm. The objective of this study was to investigate the mating system of peach palm, as this is important for conservation and breeding. Eight microsatellite loci were used to genotype 24 open-pollinated progenies from three populations of the Pampa Hermosa landrace maintained in a progeny trial for genetic improvement. Both the multi-locus outcrossing rates (0.95 to 0.99) and the progeny level multi-locus outcrossing rates (0.9 to 1.0) were high, indicating that peach palm is predominantly allogamous. The outcrossing rates among relatives were significantly different...

Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) O. Kuntze., also known as brazilian-pine, is a forest native species from Brazil. A. angustifolia is more vulnerable to global climate change, considering it is living in cold and humid mountain regions from southern and southeastern Brazil. Among the native Brazilian forest species, it presents one of the greatest growth and genetic gain potential. It shows excellent wood quality and can still be used in human and animal food, presenting great economic, social and environmental value. In order to determine current distribution of the species and better know its habitat, we worked in the regions representing the borders of natural occurrence, identifying populations and getting trees altitude and geographycal position....

Melo,Marília Freitas de Vasconcelos; Alvares-Carvalho,Sheila Valéria; Souza,Erica Moraes Santos de; Gois,Itamara Bomfim; Ferreira,Robério Anastácio; Silva-Mann,Renata.
ABSTRACT Hymenaea courbaril is a rare species in the riparian areas of the state of Sergipe, Brazil. This species is known as Brazilian cherry or Brazilian copal and it occurs in fragments of the Rainy Forest and in the transition zones between the Rainy Forest and the Caatinga Biomes. This work was carried out, in order to quantify the genetic diversity of the remaining population of Brazilian cherry, by RAPD markers. In a studied area of 100 ha in the low course of the São Francisco River, only 15 individuals were observed. The analyzed parameters were as follows: Jaccard’s genetic similarity, the number of observed alleles, the number of effective alleles, the genetic diversities of Nei, the percentages of the polymorphic loci, the genetic diversities...

Aguiar,Ananda Virginia de; Vencovsky,Roland; Chaves,Lázaro José; Moura,Mara Fernandes; Morais,Lizz Kezzy de.
The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters of quantitative traits in a living germplasm collection of Eugenia dysenterica. The genetic material consisted of 110 progenies derived from 10 natural Eugenia dysenterica subpopulations sampled in the southeastern region of the state of Goiás. The experiment was established in a complete randomized block design, with 110 treatments, four replications and one tree per plot. The study variables were total height, stem diameter and respective growth rates. After the analysis of variance some genetic parameters were estimated. The levels of genetic variation in the collection were high and the highest proportion was found within subpopulations. Highest coefficients of heritability and genetic...

Mating system in a natural population of Theobroma grandiflorum (Willd. ex Spreng.) Schum., by microsatellite markers Genet. Mol. Biol.
Alves,Rafael M.; Artero,Angela S.; Sebbenn,Alexandre M.; Figueira,Antonio.
The aim of this research was to study the mating system of a natural population of Theobroma grandiflorum (cupuassu) from Nova Ipixuna, Pará state, using microsatellite markers. Eight polymorphic microsatellite loci were analyzed in eight families, each represented by 10 six-month old seedlings derived from open-pollinated pods. The estimation for the multilocus outcrossing rate (<img border=0 id="_x0000_i1026" src="../../img/revistas/gmb/v26n3/a25img01.gif" align=absmiddle>m = 1.0) and individual outcrossing rate (<img border=0 id="_x0000_i1027" src="../../img/revistas/gmb/v26n3/a25img01.gif" align=absmiddle> = 1.0) for this population suggests that T. grandiflorum may be a perfect outbreeding (allogamous) species. Likewise, for the studied...

Outcrossing rate of Couratari multiflora (J.Smith) Eyma (Lecythidaceae), a low-density tropical tree species from a central Amazonian rainforest Acta Amazonica
Lepsch-Cunha,Nadja; Kageyama,Paulo Yoshio; Vencovsky,Roland; Nascimento,Henrique E. M..
A multilocus mixed-mating model was used to evaluate the mating system of a population of Couratari multiflora, an emergent tree species found in low densities (1 individual/10 ha) in lowland forests of central Amazonia. We surveyed and observed phenologically 41 trees in an area of 400 ha. From these, only four mother trees were analyzed here because few of them set fruits, which also suffered high predation. No difference was observed between the population multilocus outcrossing rate (t mp = 0.953 ± 0.040) and the average single locus rate (t sp = 0.968 ± 0.132). The four mother trees were highly outcrossed (t m ~ 1). Two out of five loci showed departures from the Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE) expectations, and the same results occurred with the...

Population structure, fluctuating asymmetry and genetic variability in an endemic and highly isolated Astyanax fish population (Characidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Gross,Maria Claudia; Schneider,Carlos Henrique; Matiello,Mara Cristina de Almeida; Leite,Maysa de Lima; Bertollo,Luiz Antonio Carlos; Artoni,Roberto Ferreira.
Morphological and chromosomal markers were used to infer the structure and genetic variability of a population of fish of the genus Astyanax, geographically isolated at sinkhole 2 of Vila Velha State Park, Paraná, Brazil. Two morphotypes types were observed, the standard phenotype I and phenotype II which showed an anatomical alteration probably due to an inbreeding process. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) analysis of different characters showed low levels of morphological variation among the population from sinkhole 2 and in another population from the Tibagi river (Paraná, Brazil). The Astyanax karyotype was characterized in terms of chromosomal morphology, constitutive heterochromatin and nucleolar organizer regions. Males and females presented similar...
